Launching of National Greening Program

A fruit tree planting activity was conducted in Brgy. Sinakayanan, Catigbian on the launching of National Greening Program, August 19, 2011. It’s the first time to happened in the municipality where employees from national agencies  DENR, DPWH, DA, DepED represented by the faculty and students of Haguilanan High School, municipal officials and employees, barangay officials converged for a fruit bearing tree planting activity. It can be recalled that the municipality of Catigbian was also the first to had its LOA(Letter of Agreement) signing with DENR on NGP implementation last April 2011.The National Greening Program involves nine identified barangays in Catigbian which are to be planted with assorted fruit trees and forest trees.

During the activity, Rev. Fr. Danny Maniwan gave the blessings to the 2,000 seedlings to be planted. CENRO Eusalem Quiwag presented a power point presentation about National Greening Program. The National Greening Program aims to plant some 1.5 B trees covering about 1.5 M hectares for a period of six(6) years from 2011 to 2016 all over the country as stated in the E.O. No.26. He further stressed that the program is a national government priority with its objectives on poverty reduction, sustainable management of natural resources, provision of food, goods and services, promote public awareness and instill social and environmental consciousness on the value of forest and watershed.

Mayor Salinas in his message, is pleased that Catigbian was the first to implement NGP for it connects to the existing ordinance on Fruit Bearing Tree Planting Program, requiring all graduating elementary and secondary students in the municipality to plant at least 5 fruit bearing trees as pre-requisite for graduation. He also added that the program contributes to the neutralization of global warming, addresses and eventually check on the malnutrition problem and will create livelihood for additional income. It’s benefit will not take effect right away but soon in the next several years to come. He encouraged everybody not just to plant but care, for this noble endeavor is our share to the next generation.
